Published on the occasion of an exhibition at Pays-Paysage in 1993 in Vzerche, France:
"This exhibition offers a very first viewing of a collection of books produced by the Russian avant-garde from 1910 to 1930, as well as books from more recent periods produced in the USSR and what is now Russia.
The mythical books of the turn of the century tell us how the artists managed to incorporate their art in a collective, political commitment. For all these artists, men and women alike, the book was not a mere ‘opus’, it was something that delivered new ideas.
The 1930-1960 period is not represented, because it is still to find or gain access to works produced during those times, for reasons with which we are all familiar.
From 1960 on, the production of books has gained momentum ….In spite of their conspicuous isolation, artists of the ex-USSR have been able to pick up the thread, hitherto broken, with the avant-garde of the second two decades of this century. They have also invented techniques which link their past with an active quest for new and contemporary frames.”
