Capital Scout Brussels

“In its apparent banality, the door becomes a marker of boundaries and transitions, an object that indicates both physical and symbolic divisions between the public and private domains. Whilst living in Brussels I got captivated by it's chaotic architecture. A mixture of decay and progress. During the many walks with my son and now ex partner my eyes and thus my camera started capturing the doors of Brussels. The huge variety of doors reflect the diverse city of Brussels, capital of Europe.

I focus not only on the door as an object in space, but as a carrier for hidden narratives. The door is the limit of the visible; what lies behind it is only a suggestion, an invitation to speculation. As for the doors I photographed, it is the ambiguity of their presence that fascinates me. They suggest intimacy and exclusion at the same time, evoking the paradox of what they hide without ever revealing.

My aim is to document the door in its complete banality and then transform it into a generator of mystery. Bringing together a collection of these objects creates a narrative that cannot be captured by logic, but moves between the boundaries of visibility and invisibility, between what is shown and what remains hidden. This project explores the door as an artefact of existential separation, as a stylistic element that constantly renegotiates the relationship between inside and outside, between the personal and the public.”

b/w reproduced photographs of front doors and entrances in Brussels, this book is part of the series ‘Capital Scout’, a life long project to explore front doors in various capital cities.
