De Tedere Activist Jacob Israël de Haan 1881-1924

Schalken, Mark

Regular price €12,50

“Poor and Jewish, raised in Zaandam, Jacob Israël de Haan left for Amsterdam, where he became a socialist and set his controversial gay novel Pijpelijntjes in 1904. In 1919 he moved to Palestine, where as a journalist he exposed abuse of power and sang about Jewish and Arab life in his poems. He was murdered in 1924.

On the 100th anniversary of Jacob’s death Mark Schalken created this art cahier with illustrations, typography and an essay on the topicality of Jacob’s commitment. At the heart of the cahier are twelve quatrains, set to music and translated by Ron Mesland. Author Mattias Duyves introduces Jacob as the Netherlands’ first radical gay activist.

Jacob Israël de Haan developed from a born outsider into a courageous idealist. His infinite desires allowed him to reach across borders, classes and cultures and make him enduringly relevant. We hope through this publication that Jacob will touch you, as he has touched us and continues to inspire us.” – Mark, Ron & Mattias

A multimedia homage to pioneering activist and poet Jacob Israël de Haan, whose words can be read on the Homo Monument in Amsterdam.

This publication features essays, poems, music (through QR access), illustrations and collages, text in Dutch and English.
