”In this issue of Pist Protta, we look at anti-monuments, counter-monuments and other alternative memorials over the last 150 years.
About a year ago, Swedish curator Peter Box Andersson — who contributed already to Pist Protta no. 12 — contacted us and suggested we make an issue dedicated to this topic. He also suggested that the Swedish art historian Thomas Millroth be involved.
Obviously, recent years’ removal of statues and other forms of protests against former rulers and their policies make this topic relevant. What is acceptable in public space? Violence, poverty, nudity? Smoking, drinking, strong emotional outbursts? What about the ugly and offensive monuments pushing for one-sided and simplistic historical narratives, are they acceptable?
There is a long tradition of artists and activists modifying or deconstructing monuments that seem outdated or manipulative in their scope.
We look at the artistic interventions that aim to revitalize the aesthetic manifestations of memory in the spaces we share.
We look at public space as an ideological landscape.”
A critical examination of commemorative art in the public space and how it relates to cultural memory, changing perceptions of history and suppressed narratives, with contributions by a great many artists and thinkers, text in Danish and/or English.
