“Spanish by Dora is the result of a collaboration between Dora, a 3- year-old British girl living in London, and her uncle, Giles. Dora expressed words, letters, and sentences in her version of Spanish, based on her understanding of the language. She dictated these to Giles, who transcribed them onto a folded piece of paper, later adorned by Dora with colourful annotations. Good Neighbour has transformed this collaboration into a riso-printed booklet, produced in a limited edition of 100 copies. Each copy of Spanish is accompanied by a unique trinket sourced from the personal archives of a Good Neighbour member, collected during childhood and teenage years. These small objects, seen as ‘signs’ and ‘words’ of a potential language, complement Dora’s interpretation of Spanish in the book.
This edition is brought to you by Good Neighbour, a community of readers who share a communal interest for books seen as performative tools. The unique communication among Good Neighbour members, using a ‘broken’ and ‘adapted’ English due to their diverse mother tongues, inspired an exploration of how languages are learned, transmitted and how these can be seen and used as a subjective and creative tool.”
A personal reimagination of the Spanish language, illustrated and uniquely decorated.
