“Awoken in the Square is a flipbook that captures a dreamscape witnessed by the narrator—an introspective escape from the burdens and demands of everyday life. In the dream, she sits quietly on a bus, drifting through a still and distant world. Upon waking, she returns to the vivid intensity of reality.
The making involved repeatedly drawing and scanning a sequence of images, then returning to the first frame to build up layers of tone, one after another. This circular and ongoing method resonates with the eternity felt in the dream. Though each frame moves in the same rhythm, their growing density breaks free from the confinement of the loop, enriching the image and amplifying the emotion.
The book sees highway buses not only as moments of estrangement from reality, but also as vessels carrying fragments of countless lives. As the narrator senses that she can no longer fall asleep, Awoken in the Square reflects on the inevitable bond between the individual and the world, and hints at the latent potential of non-places.”
A flipbook with reproduced painted images in a dreamlike sequence printed recto, with a running text in Korean and English printed verso.
