“The poems in this book were written in 1970-72. On the book cover are photos from the pathology report of those cancerous cells in my left ball. As the cancer got started, grew, and was cut out in the same 2 year period in which the poems were written, I think there is some connection between the body that wrote them and the poems. You might say that both are the result of the same karma. As the images of the poems are found in any words I've seen or heard in every day life, coming into my sense inputs from news-papers, magazine, radio, TV, or books, you might also say the poems bear the same relationship to American karma. The images are American cancer cells. The poems are a biopsy. The reality of cancer transformed into words.”
