Ferry Poetry… a result of running late

“From January to June 2024, I took my daily route, on the ferry, in Amsterdam, crossing the IJ river: Pontsteiger to NDSM, to and from my letterpress studio, where I was doing an internship. With a new timetable, I occasionally missed my otherwise well-timed boat. I gained an additional 20-minute gap of time… a moment that became a deep breath, before the start of my day, during which I found myself writing a quick poem. Arriving to the letterpress studio, late, I was excused by my boss, Corine Elmes, who eventually began to greet me by simply saying, “Show me the poem and I will forgive you”.

I printed my own poetry for this series, I then decided to open up this concept to my other ferry-goers… I asked those around me, both late and punctual, to write down their thoughts and feelings, in whichever way felt most poetic to them.”

A series of pictures showing hands holding cards with dates, timestamps and brief poetic reflections written on them, either in English or in Dutch (English translation provided), a final image shows a text message exchange between the artist and her employer which contextualises the ferry poetry project, riso- and letterpress-printed in black and blue (a shade similar to the painted hulls of the Amsterdam ferries).

Blue paper cover of varying hue, saddle-stitched, 10 x 13 cm, 20 not numbered pages, Amsterdam 2025
