“Publishing, as an act of making something public and sharing it with others, has always changed alongside technology. The digital web dissolved the fixity, the material condition of print publications, and turned publishing into a fluid process: one that is revised, linked, and responsive. But the very web that opened up new forms of publishing is now being reorganized around the platform’s logic of productivity and efficiency, transforming the very shape of publishing. As platform logics increasingly structure how we read and write, and as web-based publications become ever more dependent on platforms, what can publishing be today? Unbound Conditions gathers seven conversations with writers, artists, designers, developers, and publishers who have explored the web in depth.
The creators we focus on explore, each in their own way, what possibility the web can still hold even within a platform-centered environment. Deciding for themselves what to make, how to circulate it, and whom to connect with, they remake the web into a space for the practice of publishing.
As Silvio Lorusso puts it, the web once gave us the space to build a home of our own; but once platforms claimed that space, we lost the home and became wandering guests. Even so, these creators set out, once again, to build homes of their own. Looking closely at their work, this book examines both the conditions in which publishing is now placed and the possibilities that open within them.”
An exploration of publishing in a digital contexts, its challenges and opportunities, through conversation with 7 creators working with web-based publications, these creators are Are.na, Luna Maurer, Tiger Dingsun, Valiz, Mindy Seu, Silvio Lorusso, and HTTB.EU.
